The Medical Assistant program provides students with skills necessary to be responsible for all duties required of a medical assistant, phlebotomist and/or EKG technician. The Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting in taking medical histories and recording vital signs, explaining treatment procedures to patients, preparing patients and assisting physicians for examinations, collecting and preparing laboratory specimens, performing basic laboratory test, disposing of contaminated supplies, and sterilizing medical instruments, preparing and administering medications, phlebotomy, preparing patients for x rays, taking electrocardiograms, assisting in minor office surgery, and other duties associated with assisting medical professionals. This Program will also provide students with the principles of renal dialysis, preparing, monitoring, and maintaining dialysis equipment. This program requires students to complete an externship prior to graduation.
Students completing the Medical Assistant Program will be eligible to enroll in the Associate of Applied Science Medical/Allied Health Technician Program.
Graduates may be eligible to test for the National Center for Competency Testing for the Medical Assistant and /or Phlebotomist certifications.
