Medical Allied Health Support Technician

Course Description

The Medical/Allied Health Support Technician Program provides students with skills necessary to be responsible for high-level front-and back-office functions. Medical /Allied Health Support Technicians' responsibilities range from front-office work performing tasks such as updating and filing patients’ medical records, insurance billing and coding, transcribing physician notes, answering telephones, greeting patients, handling correspondence, scheduling appointments, and handling billing and bookkeeping. Backoffice tasks such as assisting in taking medical histories and recording vital signs, explaining treatment procedures to patients, preparing patients and assisting physicians for examinations, collecting and preparing laboratory specimens, performing basic laboratory test, disposing of contaminated supplies, and sterilizing medical instruments, preparing and administering medications, phlebotomy, preparing patients for x rays, taking electrocardiograms, assisting in minor office surgery, and other duties associated with assisting medical professionals. This program will also provide students with the principles of renal dialysis, preparing, monitoring, and maintaining dialysis equipment. This program requires students to complete an externship prior to graduation. Outof- School assignments will be required in lecture classes.

Students completing the Medical /Allied Health Support Technician Program will be eligible to enroll in the Associate of Applied Science Medical/Allied Health Technician Program. Graduates may be eligible to test for the National Center for Competency Testing for the Medical Assistants, Phlebotomists, and the Insurance and Coding Specialists certifications.

Upon successful graduation from this program, graduates should be able to:

  • Function in a healthcare setting requiring clinical and/or office skills;
  • Prepare and maintain the examination/treatment area under the supervision of a physician;
  • Use computer technology and administrative skills in a healthcare environment.

Out-of-School assignments will be required in some classes.
